Safety tips 4 bikes
-Teach ur kids esp since they have less sense of danger or judgement of car speed/distance
-pedals, seat, handlebars, tires & brakes should be in good condition & work properly. Ur bike should be right size 4 u. Bike shops can make sure ur bike fits & is safe
-obey traffic laws
-CPSC, Snell or ATSM approved helmets recommended 4 all bikers. -Some cities & counties have local helmet use mandate, in some locations applies only 2 children in some applies 2 all. If u can push helmet off head without unbuckling it then tighten it
-b more visible; make eye contact w drivers @ intersections. If have helmet mounted light can attract drivers attention by moving head. Consider reflective tape/strips on bike, helmet knees & ankles
-be predictable & defensive; avoid weaving in & out of parking lane. Leave ~3 ft u & parked cars
-scan rd; wet, ice, dim, slotted storm drains, potholes, pavement cracks parallel to ur lane, & train tracks. Allow 4 additional braking time needed based on conditions. Always yield 2 peds & traffic b4 entering or crossing Rd
- never ride against traffic/on wrong side of rd
-ride in strisght line to right of traffic but about a car door width away from parked cars
-never pass vehicles on right @ intersections. Cars turning left might not look for or see u
-watch for cars pulling out esp in on front of u; even if u make eye contact they might not see u
-left turns bikes can turn from left lane or left turn lane, or stay in right lane, cross st, stop @ right corner & proceed in new direction, w traffic or green light
-Scan Rd behind u; even if use rearviews, learn 2 ride & look back kver shoulder without loosong balance/direction
-keep both hands ready 2 brake, allow xtra distance when wet bc brakes might not work right when wet & tires skid more easily
-watch 4 dogs; spinning of wheels & feet attracts dogs, if dog starts 2 chase ignore it or firmly loudly yell no, if they don’t stop get off bike and put it between u & dog
When can bikers use the left side of the Rd?
Bikes on 1 wys except freeways can ride as nesr left as safe
May go left b4 & during turns or when passing another bike/vehicle.

Local agencies au prohibit biking on some sections of sidewalks
