Why is hearing helpful for driving? Can deaf or HoH ppl drive safely?
Helpful. Horns, sirens, screeching tires can warn u.
Hearing problems, like eyesight can come on so slow u dont notice.
Drivers who know theyre deaf/HoH can adjust & be safe drivers. They learn 2 rely more on vision & tend 2 stay more alert.
Studies show hearing impaired driver & good hearing drivers have equally good driving records

What conditions can u try to get a restricted driver licenses?
(IIL or ORL)
Process to get it?
If driving privilege in WA suspended/revoked, may be eligible 4 temp restricted liscense.
After applying 4 it specialist evaluates ur driving record & determines what u qualify 4

Juvenile alc/drug/firearm violations
If ur 13-17 & convicted of 1st alc/firearm violation or 13-20 and convicted of 1st drug violation, driving privilege revoked 4 1yr or until 17 whichever is longer
2nd offense ur driving privilege is revoked 4 2yrs or until 18 whichever is longer
Minor & moderate ailments that can affect driving
Bad cold, infection or virus, or even little things like stiff neck, cough or sore leg can affect driving. If feeling unwell let someone else drive.
These health conditions can be v dangerous when driving
Epilepsy - if under care of doctor, taking ur meds & haven’t had a seizure.for 6 months u may drive
Diabetes - if take insulin don’t drive if any chance of insulin reaction, blackout, convulsion or shock. Good idea 2 use alternative 2 driving urself when doctor is adjusting ur insulin dose. Have eyes checked regularly 4 night blindness/other vision issues
Heart condition - heart disease, high blood pressure, circulation issues or in danger of blackout, fainting or heart attack shouldnt drive. If being treated 4 heart condition ask doctor ab how it affects driving
Emotions
If angry/excited take time 2 cool off, try short walk
If worried/depressed/upset try 2 keep mind on driving, some find listening 2 radio helps
If impatient, allow xtra time 4 trip so I get there sooner & don’t speed
If other drivers seem angy what do
When see other drivers acting angry distance urself physically & mentally
- avoid eye contact
- body movements & gestures can provoke anger
- slow, move over or do whatever fo get urself away from danger. U doing it may encourage other drivers to do it too

What specific vision functions are important 4 driving?
-peripheral vision; u must be able 2 see out corners of eyes & must also use side mirrors + glance 2 side of nessecary
-judging distance/speed; some ppl struggle to judge accuratelt. Esp important 4 judging safe merging gaps, passing on 2 lane rds, judging speed of train b4 xing safely
-night vision; some drivers have problems w glsr @ night. If u have night vision issues don’t night drive drive more than nessecary & be super careful
Vision test 4 license
U must pass vision text b4 drivers license
Liscense may have restriction 4 corrective lenses.
May require exam by eye care specialist & submit Visual Examination Report
