Define Reshut HaYachid
defN and 2 qualities
Private Domain
At least 4x4 tefachim (14 x 14 inches).
Any part of public property that is 10 tefachim higher (around 3 feet) or lower than its surrounding area (like a pit or mound) and its surface area is 4x4 tefachim is also considred reshut hayachid. Any object (like a cupboard, crate, wagon, or car) which is standing in a reshut harabbim and is at least ten tefachim high is considred a reshut hayachid and no objects may be transfered from it to the reshut harabim on Shabbat.
what is a Carmelit? Two definitions
1) Measures 4x4 tefachim and is enclosed by a partition that over three but less than 10 tefachim high (or deep)
2) Any area that does not qualify as a reshut harabim or reshut hayachid. For example a field, open country, sea, desert, or open street.
What is a Makom Patur?
An exempted space.
It is in the rashut harabim, has a surface area less than 4x4 tefachim (so it is too small to be a reshut hayachid or carmelit) and it is higher or lower than its surroundings by at least three tefachim.
On Shabbat can you…
A) transfer between domains? what is the exception?
B) How can you get Jewelry from one domain to another?
C) Can you carry Mukzeh items?
A) No. Execpt you can go from
Public domain –> makom patur –> public domain OR
public domain –> makom patur –> public domain.
You can’t go public domain –> makom patur –> private domain. and vica versa.
B) You wear it. don’t put it in your pocket.
C) Nope. Not even within one domain.
A) Can you pick up and carry an item within a reshut harabim? Under what condition?
B) Same question, but for a carmelit
Yes, as long as you don’t carry it 4 amot (around 6 feet)
B) Same anser
What is Techum Shabbos?
“The Shabbes Boundary”. One should not walk more than 2,000 amot from the town or settlement. Even if you aren’t carrying anything. (.5-1 mile)
We can make an “eruv techumin” so we can walk more.
How do we make an Eruv? 2 things
- create a “sahpe of an entrance”, two poles capped by a beam or cord which are considered a partition.
- Bread which was acquired on behalf of the citizens is kept in someone’s home. By making an eruv catzeros, residents are cnsidred joint owners of the entire city, so carrying within it becomes permitted.
