A

What are the parameters for traveling before Shabbat? (3 things)

A

We shouldn’t leave for a trip 3 days before Shabbat unless
*the trip is for mitzvah purposes
*we will get to the destination before Shabbat
Rema: any purpose that is not ‘for fun’ or לטול is considered ‘for mitzvah purposes’. Ie, business or visiting a person.

Is there a commandment to let your untensils sit and rest on Shabbat?

A

No. So you can set things up before Shabbat and let them run. Be careful of marit ayin though. Ie - don’t start your washer right before shabbat. techincally it is allowed, but it looks bad.

Should you check your pockets in the afternoon before Shabbat?

A

Yes. Don’t go out w/ a pen or needle since you’ll forget and carry them during Shabbat. It is ok to go out with Tefillin, since you won’t forget tefillin.

What is a kli rishon? כלי ראשון

A

“first vessel”. It is a vessel that was heated directly on a flame or other source of heat.

Even when removed from the source of heat, this vessel maintains its status as a kli rishon, and possesses the capacity to enact bishul on any type of food placed within it.

What is a kli sheni?

What how is it different than a כלי ראשון? כלי שלישלי?

A

“second vessel”. When hot food or liquid is transferred from the kli rishon into a second utensil, this utensil is called a kli sheni.

It is permitted to add certain spices, oil, water, or other liquids into a kli sheni. You can’t put uncooked food into a cli sheni, D’Rambanan since it will look like you are cooking.

A

Yes.

a) The food has to be at least half cooked. B’Diavad, 1/3 cooked is sufficent.
b) Why? We are concerned that when it is time to eat, someone will be tempted to speed up the cooking so they will increase the fire.
c) This applies to all foods.

A

Yes
a) If the food is raw, the fire should be covered so he reminded that it is shabbat & he won’t be tempted to adjust the coals. In modern times, the blech should cover a stove’s knobs and an electric hotplate should have the controls covered (or no controls whatsoever)

A)No. Not even if the dish is fully cooked. You CAN cover the pot if you are concerned about mice falling in; then it is not for heat.

Rema : b’diavad if the substance heats the food, you can eat the food for Shabbat lunch.

Some think the place has to be w/in 4 cubits, others do not.

A

When it is for the sake of a Mitzvah. Ie, you can ask a non Jew to turn on the lights in the place where you are having a Shabbat meal.

A

1) not pursue your affairs –> can’t promote your interest and businesses. Ie, you can’t order a taxi
2) . And speaking words —> cant discuss matters forbidden on shabbat. Ie, writing a letter or moving a car. You can talk about melacha, though if it is related to performing a mitzvah (ie, getting a teacher for your kid or collecting for charity)

yes, they can take medicine.

Children up to age 9 or 10 are considered “ill people who are not in danger”.

If the headache is so bad they have to lay down, they can take an asprin. I feel like anyone can take an asprin.

No. If she feels that she will get better care from a different hospital, then she can go there.
Someone may travel with her.

A) She is considered as a person who is sick who’s life is in danger
B) Only break Shabbbat if she herself asks for it, otherwise she is considered as one who is sick whos life is not in danger.
C) She is considered as one who is sick whos life is not in danger.

A

Yes. They are always in the status of a person who is sick and their life is in danger.

A

Gathering Sheaves. It is forbidden on shabbat.

Includes gathering fruit which fell from a tree, threading frutis on a string or pressing them onto a roll.
