Shabbat Flashcards
Can we travel before Shabbat?
Yes, but care has to be taken so that we aren’t traveling on Shabbat.
What are the parameters for traveling before Shabbat? (3 things)
We shouldn’t leave for a trip 3 days before Shabbat unless
*the trip is for mitzvah purposes
*we will get to the destination before Shabbat
Rema: any purpose that is not ‘for fun’ or לטול is considered ‘for mitzvah purposes’. Ie, business or visiting a person.
Is there a commandment to let your untensils sit and rest on Shabbat?
No. So you can set things up before Shabbat and let them run. Be careful of marit ayin though. Ie - don’t start your washer right before shabbat. techincally it is allowed, but it looks bad.
Should you check your pockets in the afternoon before Shabbat?
Yes. Don’t go out w/ a pen or needle since you’ll forget and carry them during Shabbat. It is ok to go out with Tefillin, since you won’t forget tefillin.
What is a kli rishon? כלי ראשון
“first vessel”. It is a vessel that was heated directly on a flame or other source of heat.
Even when removed from the source of heat, this vessel maintains its status as a kli rishon, and possesses the capacity to enact bishul on any type of food placed within it.
What is a kli sheni?
What how is it different than a כלי ראשון? כלי שלישלי?
“second vessel”. When hot food or liquid is transferred from the kli rishon into a second utensil, this utensil is called a kli sheni.
It is permitted to add certain spices, oil, water, or other liquids into a kli sheni. You can’t put uncooked food into a cli sheni, D’Rambanan since it will look like you are cooking.
What is a kli slishi?
“third vessel” A kli shlishi is the third utensil into which hot food or liquid is transferred.
there is no concern of bishul with a kli slishi.
Can you place food on an open fire before Shabbat, to stay there during Shabbat?
a) Under what conditions?
b) Why?
c) Does this apply to all foods?
Yes.
a) The food has to be at least half cooked. B’Diavad, 1/3 cooked is sufficent.
b) Why? We are concerned that when it is time to eat, someone will be tempted to speed up the cooking so they will increase the fire.
c) This applies to all foods.
Can you place food on a closed fire before Shabbat, to stay there during Shabbat?
a) Under what conditions?
Yes
a) If the food is raw, the fire should be covered so he reminded that it is shabbat & he won’t be tempted to adjust the coals. In modern times, the blech should cover a stove’s knobs and an electric hotplate should have the controls covered (or no controls whatsoever)
Define הטמנה
Covering a pot of hot food in order to retain or add to its heat.
Define להשהותו
“Shehiya”, leaving a pot on a stove, in this case leaving a pot on a stove from before Shabbat into Shabbat.
Can there be הטמנה if the pot is uncovered?
No
a) Can you do הטמנה once Shabbat begins? Under what conditions?
b) how about erev Shabbat? Under what conditions?
A)No. Not even if the dish is fully cooked. You CAN cover the pot if you are concerned about mice falling in; then it is not for heat.
B) Yes, if the substance does not add heat to the food.
Rema : b’diavad if the substance heats the food, you can eat the food for Shabbat lunch.
If a pot was already covered, can you uncover it on Shabbat and then recover it? Under what conditions?
Yes, most conditions. If the second covering adds heat, then the food has to be fully cooked.
When do we say Kiddush? Where?
Kiddush must be done just before eating, in the place that you eat the meal. “You should proclaim Shabbat Pleasure” in the place where we have pleasure.
