Q

Can you bless a havdalah candle with one wick?

a) best practice? Why?
b) is one wick ok? why or why not?

A

a) The best practice is to bless a torch, which has many wicks and flames. Because the blessing says “who creates the lights of fire”
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא מְאוֹרֵי הָאֵשׁ.
b) One wick is acceptable because a fire consists of many hues : red flame, white, and green flames.

Q

What are three conditions that should be met for reciting the blessing over the havdalah candle?

A

A) The candle is close enough that one can enjoy and use its light. It should be sufficiently close to distinguish between coins of different countries.

B) One should see the flame itself and not just the halo.

C) The candle should have been lit by a Jew (or a non jew who lights the candle off of a candle that the Jew lights) in a permitted way. The permitted way is after shabbat, before shabbat, or on shabbat for a sick person.
