Tying a knot. It is forbidden to tie a permanent knot on Shabbat.
D’Rabanan - it is forbidden to tie a knot that lasts more than 24 hours. Also, if you are a craftsman you can not tie a knot.
Why is tying a knot forbidden on Shabbat?
As part of the process of constructing the tabernacle, snail hunters would tie permanent knots in the threads of the nets in order to repair, enlarge, or shrink them.
On Shabbat, can you make a double knot that will be untied within 24 hours?
No, since it is hard to distinguish them from craftsman knots.
What is בורר and when is it allowed on Shabbat (3 conditions)?
Selecting. You can select if all of the following three conditions are met:
1) We pick the wanted object from the unwanted object
2) It is done by hand and not a tool (forks and knives are not considered tools)
3) It is for immediate use
What should you do if a fly falls into your soup on Shabbat?
Because of בורר, you can’t just pick out the fly. You have to throw out a little soup too.
Under what circumstances can you peel a fruit for Shabbes?
Only if you are going to eat the fruit immediately. If not, it is considered בורר
On Shabbes, can you tell a non Jew to do work for a Jew? What if the work is to be done after Shabbes?
