What are the two main types of amnesia?
Anterograde amnesia-Loss of the ability to create new memories, inability to recall recent past while long term memories remain intact.
Retrograde amnesia-Loss of memory of events that occurred before an injury or onset of disease.
What are the major research methods used for investigating memory?
Looking at patients with damaged areas of brain e.g. hippocampus and see how it affects them.
FMRI allows people with memory impairments brain activity to be compared to controls.
Animal testing e.g. getting rats to learn maze the lesioning particular memory areas of brain
What are the signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder?
Dramatic mood swings from emotional highs to emotional lows. Manic episodes: High energy and excessive activity Overly good mood Irritability or impatience Fast, erratic talking
Depressed episodes:
Sadness, anxiety, or a feeling of emptiness
Hopelessness
Feelings of guilt, feeling worthless, or feeling helpless
Lack of interest in activities that were once enjoyable, such as sex

Affect (feelings) - e.g. feeling sad or happy
Behaviour (interactions) - e.g. being able to work or not work
Cognition (thoughts) - e.g. having thoughts of suicide
what are the advantages and disadvantages of self report questionnaires such as the Beck depression inventory (BDI)?
Advantages:
easy to administer
cheap for studies
can be done in large numbers
Disadvantages:
Patients may exaggerate symptoms in order to make the symptoms seem worse.
may underreport to make their condition seem not as bad.
people may simply misinterpret the information.
