What is Socio-cultural normality?
Characteristic patterns of normal behaviours and beliefs.
What is Functional Normality?
Can an individual function in the roles that
have developed around her?
What is Situational Normality?
Normal behaviours are constructed
according to environment
What is Statistical Normality?
Normality as typicality or an expression of central tendency (median, mode, mean)
What is Historical Normality?
What used to be deemed normal may not be any more.
What is medical normality?
What the expected state is, this is crucial in establishing the sick role.
Can be assigned to beliefs and attributions aswell as symptoms and illnesses
What are the two aspects of maladaptive behaviour?
Self-maladaptation - internal process, feel society is not adapting to them
Social maladaptation - external process, society considers you a maladapting individual
How does modern psychiatry look at abnormality?
Tries to diagnose from observable behaviours rather than trying to understand the individuals thoughts.
What is Cultural relativism?
In modern society which cultures standards do we use to determine if a behaviour is normal.
