environment
What are the three main states of unconsciousness?
Coma
Deep sleep
Unconscious mind

Clouding-agitation with memory disturbance and disorientation
Drowsiness-Tendency to drift into sleep without sensory stimulation (slow actions, slurred speech

gaps
Affect illusions – these are dependent upon an
individual’s mood state
Pareidolic illusions – these illusions arise due
to excessive fantasy thinking
What is the behavioural definition of sleep?

In the neurophysical definition of sleep what are the measurements that are made?
EEG-electrical activity of the brain
eye movements
muscle tone
What does a circadian rhythm mean?
Means a roughly 24 hour cycle that the body follows. Many tissues in mammals demonstrate circadian oscillations.
What are the main causes of excessive sleepiness?
Sleep-wake dysregulation - narcolepsy
Circadian management - Shift work disorders
Sleep Disruption- Obstructive sleep apnoea, Depression, parasomnias
What are parasomnias?
Sleep walking and nightmares
Presence of muscle tone with REM indicative of parasomnias
What is Narcolepsy?
Fall asleep uncontrollably throughout the day for
periods between 1-30 mins
