What is the difference between phonetics and phonology?
Phonetics is how particular sounds are produced
Phonology is how sounds are used to produce words
What is the difference between written and spoken language?
Written language is distinct words seperated by spaces
Spoken language is often without gaps and is continous, it can be mumbled or damaged sounds
What are the differences between vowels and constants?
Vowels are vibrating the vocal cords within the larynx with a clear vocal tract
Consonants involves some occlusion of the vocal tract
What are the 5 components of language?
Phonology-the use of sounds to form words
Morpholgy-the structure of the words
Syntax - how words are combined to form sentences
Semantics - word and sentence meanings for what is spoken
Pragmatics - social use of learning
What is language lateralisation?
Refers to the dominant nature of one hemisphere for language. In 90% of right handed individuals then it is the left hemisphere.
What is aphasia?
Localised brain dysfunction causing disturbance of language formation and comprehension
What is alexia?
Acquired inability to read
What is agraphia?
The aquired inability to write usually caused by a localised brain disease
