What is the definition of FGM?
All procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or injury to the female genital organs for non medical reasons.
What are the 4 types of FGM?
Type 1 - excision of the prepuce with or without part or all of the clitoris
Type 2 - excision involving part or whole of labia minora or majora
Type 3 - Excision of part or all of external female genetalia with stitching
Type 4 - Unclassified, including pricking, piercing, incising or any corrosive substances
Why is FGM preformed?
Tradition, culture, hygiene, control female sexual activity, chastity
What are the immediate complications of FGM?
Pain, haemorrhage, infection, fractures, shock (hypovolaemia and sepsis), death
What are some long term complications of FGM?
Recurrent UTIs as with class 3 urine becomes trapped. Chronic pain Dysmenorrhoea Genital fistulae Difficulty concieving Keloids Labial fusion
Wha is the law on FGM?
It is illegal to perform or not report it
