sexuality and identity Flashcards
What is sexuality
Sexuality refers to sexual orientation- who people are sexually attracted to. Main categories in relation to sexuality are heterosexual, homosexual
How does sexuality link to identity
For the most part consideration of sexuality in relation to identity largely refers to homosexuality as heterosexuality is not so much an identity because of many years of socialisation through various socialisation agents which reinforce it to be normal
Legal changes regarding sexuality
- Same sex marriage act 2013
Is sexuality still considered as a large part of the identity
For some people sexuality is still a very significant part of their identity. People may consider themselves part of a gay community attend gay venues and in some cases pursue leisure choices and consumption patterns that are deemed to be part of a gay identity
What would Batchelor say about sexuality
Batchelor notes that heterosexuality is represented as “normal” in the media however depictions of homosexuality in the media are changing with more characters in dramas who just happen to be gay
