gender and identity Flashcards
What does gender refer to
social differences between males and females and is based on social factors such as values, perceptions etc.
It is a socially constructed idea of femininity and masculinity
How are gender identities created
created through a range of processes such as socialisation
Describe two ways in which primary socialisation affects gender
- Cannalisation: parents give their children gender specific items such as toys reinforcing gender norms from a young age
- Manipulation: parents actively encourage their children to behave and act in a way that is considered appropriate for their gender such as dressing their daughters in dresses
Describe how the media reinforces female gender stereotypes- secondary socialisation - two sociologists
Feminist sociologist, Mcrobbie looked at magazines for girls that emphasised “getting a man” and conventional ideas of beauty
Wolf looked at how advertising presented an ideal unobtainable image which girls and women feel the need to strive for
What would be the feminist view on female gender stereotypes
Would argue that this is done in order to reinforce the partiarchy which is a society that is dominated by men and they hold all the power gender stereotypes are a way of keeping women out of power and reinforcing the nuclear family
