MEDIA- the news Flashcards
What affects the news presentation and selection-
What is “good news” made up of
It is made out of various news values that help journalists deem whether the news is worth publishing for example:
“unexpected, negativity, big, frequency, etc.” name some examples
This theory was created by Galtung and Ruge
What are the three ways in which news values can be evaluated briefly
- Are they specific to Norway?
-Does churnalism affect the news?
-Do citizen journalists affect the news?
Evaluation point- are they specific to Norway?
No as we can pick and mix our identity, globalisation, postmodernism
Evaluation point- how does churnalism affect the news
Journalists “steal” information and they no longer go out and report the internet is a frequent source of research for them. Increase in fake news
Evaluation point- citizen journalists?
Ordinary people reporting their opinion on the events this affects the news content as it leads to fake news that is more opinion based
Another thing that affects news selection and presentation-
issues?
Practical issues such as-
Money, finance and advertising: advertisements may affect the content of the media eg. a negative story will not be written about that brand
Time and space compression:
less journalists living in every country- depends on if there is a correspondent living there and if there is not the story may not be ran
A final thing that affects the news-
laws?
Regulations
such as:
OFCOM- a government regulator, regular research on television, radio, etc can shut down any programme
IPSO- regulates news papers set up after the Leveson inquiry- Rupert Murdoch
Charters- regulate news released about the royal family
Laws- ensure that the news follows laws and does not contain things such as racism
