Barnes identified 12 commonly recurring representations or stereotypes of disability in the media:
eg. sinister/ evil- portrayed as villains in James bond movies
eg.objects of ridicule- Ricky Gervais character Derek
Charity telethons- children in need
Roper- criticised as they present disabled people as dependant, happens once a year- tokenistic
However it has made progress
Tabloids
There are more stories on disability but can be negative particularly stories on mental health often portray them as lazy and fraudulently receiving benefits
Marxist perspective
rely on benefits
used as scapegoats
Social constructionist
they do not work in the media which is why they are portrayed this way
Postmodernist perspective
You can pick and mix your identity and so this is not an overall representation of disabled people
Pluralists perspective
they would say that the audience want it this way- audience demand, it is reality
