How has old media changed to new?
newspapers: news programmes/ sites
television: smart tv

Key features: convergence
one device can be used to access a wide variety of media
eg. a mobile phone can be used to watch films, listen to music, access social media, etc.
Key features: interactivity
facilitate more interaction than old media
audience able to engage
eg. being able to tweet a live video

interactivity gives more power to the audience

Two types of users of the new media
new users- young/ middle aged, educated, not materially deprived
old users- elderly, materially deprived

does new media link to revolutionary change?
Sociologists are not all in agreement that the new media is really significant or revolutionary change
evaluate the view that the new media is revoluntionary
Boyles and Haynes- argued that the new media have added to what was available from old media rather than replacing it- you can still watch television in the old way as well as on streaming services and catch up services on top of this.
Main change in terms of new media is the speed of communication
