Session 2 Flashcards
Name the two outflow valves
Pulmonary and aortic
Name the two atrioventricular valves
Cuspid and mitral
What is systole?
The period when the myocardium is contracting
Describe the spread of excitation
Action potential generated in pacemaker cells in SA node of the right atrium
Activity spreads over the atria - atrial systole - to the atrio-ventricular node
Delayed here for 120ms
Spreads down septum
Through ventricular myocardium form endo- to epicardial surface
Ventricles contract from apex up
What is equation for cardiac output? Units?
Stroke volume x heart rate
Litres/minute
What is the LUP sound?
Closure of AV valves
What is the DUP sound?
Closure of outflow valves
What is the time interval between the first and second sounds?
280ms
What is the time intervals between the second and first sound?
700ms
What is a heart murmur?
Turbulent flow of blood
What is stenosis?
A narrowed valve
When would an aortic stenosis produce a murmur?
During the rapid ejection phase
Would hear LUP-whoosh-DUP
What is incompetence?
When the valves do not close properly
What are the causes of a heart murmur?
Stenosis of a valve
Valves not closing properly
What initiates the action potential in the heart?
Spontaneous depolarisation of the pacemaker cells
