Serous Membranes Flashcards
Serous membranes
Line ventral cavities, surround organs, divided into 2 continuous layers, parietal layer and visceral layer
Parietal layer
Lines internal surface of the body wall
Visceral layer
Covers external surface of specific organs
Serous fluid
Between serous membrane layers there is serous cavity which contains serous fluid, protects the organ and reduced friction between moving organs
Membranes of thoracic cavity
Pericardium Parietal pericardium Pericardial cavity Visceral pericardium Pleura Parietal pleura Pleural cavity Visceral pleura
Pericardium
Serous membrane around the heart
Parietal pericardium - superficial layer
Pericardial cavity - filled with pericardial fluid
Visceral pericardium - touching the heart
Pleura
Serous membrane around the lung
Parietal pleura - superficial layer
Pleural cavity - space between the two filled with fluid
Visceral pleura - touching the organ
Membranes of the abdominopelvic cavity
Peritoneum
Parietal peritoneum
Peritoneal cavity
Visceral peritoneum
Peritoneum
Parietal peritoneum - lines internal walls of abdominopelvic cavity
Peritoneal cavity - potential space with serous fluid
Visceral peritoneum - covers surface if most digestive organs
Abdominopelvic divisions
Nine abdominopelvic regions and four abdominopelvic quadrants
Nine abdominopelvic regions
Right hypochondriac (below) region Epigastric (above) Left hypochondriac Right lumbar Umbilical Left lumbar Right iliac Hypogastric Left iliac
Four abdominopelvic quadrants
Right upper - liver and gallbladder Left upper - stomach Right lower - appendix Left lower Intestines in all Urinary bladder in both lower
