Life Cycle Of The Cell Flashcards
Cell cycle
Processes associated with cell division to replace aging, damaged or dead cells
What are the 2 phases?
Interphase - time between cell divisions
Mitotic phase - cell division into two cells (daughters)
Interphase
Maintenance (resting) phase
Majority of the life cycle
Normal metabolic activities
-cell growth
-cells replicate centrioles for future divisions
-“synthesis” phase: DNA replicated in preparation for cell division
-organelles and enzymes
Mitotic (M) phase
Produced two daughter cells that are genetically identical to original cell
Mitosis: division of nucleus
Cytokinesis: division of the cytoplasm
Aging
Normal and continuous process
Indicated by change in organelles and/or chromatin
Reduced metabolic functions = decreased ability to maintain homeostasis
Necrosis- damage/trauma
Apoptosis- programmed cell death
