Classification of Joints Flashcards
how are joints classified?
presence/absence of joint capsule and type of connective tissue binding articulating surfaces
fibrous joints
no joint capsule, held together by dense CT
cartilaginous joints
no joint capsule, held together by cartilage
synovial joints
have joint capsule
levels of movement allowed
synarthrosis: no movement
amphiarthrosis: slightly moveable
diarthrosis: freely moveable
types of fibrous joints
gomphoses: peg in socket joint (tooth into mandible)
sutures: joints between skull bones (no movement)
syndesmoses: joints between parallel bones
types of cartilaginous joints
synchondroses: joints where bones are joined together by hyaline cartilage (ribs to cartilage)
symphyses: little amounts of movement, bons are joined together by fibrocartilage (intervertebral disc)
