Q

SERIAL POSITION EFFECT

A
  • It is the pattern of results
  • (Concluding that..) Free recall is better for items at the BEGINNING and END of the list than for items in the MIDDLE of the list
  • Supports the Multi-Store Model for Memory: STM and LTM are SEPARATE storage systems

Q

DEFINITION: RECENCY EFFECT

A
  • is BETTER recall of items at the END of the list.

- OCCURS: items are still being rehearsed in STM when the person is asked to free recall.

Q

WHY ARE WORDS FORGOTTEN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LIST?

A
  • MIDDLE: Often unconsciously ignored since items at the beginning of the list are being rehearsed and transferred to LTM
  • Not enough CAPACITY in STM to include the middle terms (Therefore are either: LOST or FORGOTTEN)
  • ALSO: last few items are recalled because they are STILL in STM.
