MEASURES OF RETENTION X 4 R / SENSITIVITY OF RETENTION Flashcards
1
Q
DEFINITION: MEASURES OF RETENTION (MOR)
A
- Measuring how much information is remembered/retained
- Also known as retrieval methods
- They are methods of assessing how much information has been stored in memory.
2
Q
SENSITIVITY OF RETENTION
From MORE to LEAST
- Re-learning
- Recognition
- Cued recall
- Free recall
- (Serial recall)
A
- Also known as RELATIVE sensitivity of retention
- MORE sensitive measure will register that a memory is present even if only a SMALL amount of the primary remains (easiest)
- LESS sensitive measure will only register that a memory is present when a LARGE proportion of the memory remains (hardest)
3
Q
RECALL (MOR) (LEAST)
A
- The retrieval of STORED information using no or few cues
- x 3 types
- Cued recall (minimal cues are used)
- Free recall (No cues are used. Retrieving information in any order)
- Serial recall (No cues are used. Retrieving/recalling information in the order it was presented)
4
Q
RECOGNITION (MOR)
A
- Correctly choosing learned information from a set of alternatives
- EXAMPLE: Multiple choice questions on a test
- DISTRACTORS: Incorrect options from a multiple choice question
5
Q
RELEARNING (MOR) (MOST)
100 X [(OL - RL)/OL]
A
- Also known as the savings method
- Process of learning something that has been previously learnt.
- The individual would be able to calculate later the amount of information retained in memory by subtracting this information from the original learning.
6
Q
RECONSTRUCTION (MOR)
A
- Remembering past events that have been stored in Long-term memory
- Putting them together during memory recall at a later date
- Remembering features/fragments of past events
- This can be INFLUENCED by present time
