Q

DEFINITION: MEMORY

ESR

A
  • It is an active process of encoding, storing and retrieving information when we need it
  • It is the information processor (Enables us to ENCODE, STORE and RETRIEVE)
  • It is also an ACTIVE Information System.

Q

DEFINITION: LEARNING

A
  • Relatively permanent change in behavior
  • This occurs as a result of experience.
  • We are able to Measure the behaviour.

NOTE: Learning is DEPENDENT on memory

Q

ENCODING, STORING, RETRIEVAL / MULTI-STORE MODEL OF MEMORY

A

ENCODING: Creating a new memory. CONVERTING information into a usable form (code)

STORE: The code needs to be in s form that is able to be STORED in our MEMORY SYSTEM

RETRIEVAL: If the stored information is used later, it must be RETRIEVED (Meaning, it must be brought back into our consciousness)

Multi-store model of Memory:

  • Atkinson and Shiffrin
  • Sensory input… SM… STM… LTM
  • Pioneered movement toward multiple memory stores.
