Sepsis Flashcards
What is sepsis defined as
The life threatening organ dysfunction due to the disregulation of the host cell activity
What are the 3 phases that would effect the lungs
Exudative (the presence of the inflammation fluid)
Proliferation (the leaving of the cells to the outside area, they would then be used to fix the problem)
Fibrosis (the scarring of the lung walls, making it stiff and tough)
What happens when there is damage to the endothelium lining
Responsible for the coagulative cells
There would then be coagulation and clots forming
What is part of the sepsis 6
Take 6 give 6
Oxygen
Antibiotic
Fluids
Urine output levels
Blood culture
Lactate levels
What is the news2 score? What would be a bad score
Would calculate if someone is septic
Would not want a score of 7 or more
What would be needed if you have a news score of 5-6
Another risk factor
Lactate of more then 2mmol
Looking visibly bad or sick
Lack of activity and energy
What is the NICE Score
Same as the news2 score
Would be used for children
What is the % oxygen that should be maintained
A level above 92%
Preferably want to have 94-98%
Why would the patient have a purpic rash
Would have the destruction of the endothelium of organs
This would then lead to clotting
The red marks would be the blood clots that would form
What are he main mechanisms of injury for a patient w/ sepsis
Coagulation
Immunosupression
UTI
Apoptosis
Direct cytotoxicity
Hypoxic hypoxia (as sepsis would also effect the lungs and the respiratory system)
What are the components of pulmonary dysfunction
Exudative
Proliferation
Fibrosis
Surfactant damages (due to the damage of the alveoli and the t2 pneumoncytes)
Increased respiration rate
What are the components of cardiac dysfunction
Hypotension (majority of the fluid would have left the blood vessels)
Vasodilation (would then have the odema-exudate fluid would surround the tissues)
What would the levels of glucose be in a blood culture of sepsis
Gluconeogenesis, glycogenlysis and the insulin release
They would be using the glucose to produce the energy
What would you give if your not sure what cause d the sepsis infection
The broad spectrum antibiotics
E.g. meropenem
