Seperating Mixtures Flashcards
Separating a non- soluble solids from a liquid
Method:Gather apparatus shown in diagram
Put filter paper in filter funnel which is about a conical flask.
Pour soil and water mixture into filter appear and wait for soil and water in filtrate.
DIAGRAM - educreations
RESULT -the non soluble solid was unable to pass through the filter paper(residue) and the water passed through (filtrate) into the conical flask.
CONCLUSION: non soluble solids can be separated from liquids by filtration
What is a mixture
A mixture is two or more substances mingled together but not chemically combined
What is filtration/decanting
Filtration is used to separate the non soluble solid from the liquid.
Separating a soluble solid from a liquid
METHOD: set up apparatus in diagram
Pour salt and water into evaporation dish.
Turn Bunsen burner on under tripod with wire gauze and wait for water to evaporate.
DIAGRAM - educreations
RESULT - water evaporates leaving salt in evaporation dish.
CONCLUSION - soluble solids can be separated from liquids by evaporation.
What is Evaporation
Evaporation is used to separate a soluble solid from a liquid
To separate two substances by distillation
METHOD- set up apparatus in diagram
Add salt and water to the round bottomed flask.
Using Bunsen burner heat up solution ,making sure outer layer of the condenser has cold water flowing in and out from the tap.
Remove Bunsen burner when water had evaporated
DIAGRAM- educreations
RESULT - the steam changed back into water by distillation .
CONCLUSION - water and salt can be separated by distillation.
What is distillation
Distillation is used to separate two substances with different boiling points
To separate the colours of ink using chromatography
METHOD:set up apparatus in diagram
Using a pencil draw a line across chromatography paper.
Colour 2 dots on the paper , using choice of your colour
Fill beaker with water just below the line on paper and wait for ink to separate.
DIAGRAM - educreations
RESULT- the water travels up the paper, carrying the inks at different times causing them to separate
CONCLUSION- ink can be separated by chromatography
What is chromatography
Chromatography is when you separate the different dyes in ink
