Measuring Flashcards
Units of Length
The units used to measure length are millimetres (mm), centimetres (cm), metres (m) or kilometres (km).
Length is measured using what and what for?(5)
- Metre Stick - straight lines
- a ruler - straight lines
- an opisometer - short curved lines
- a trundle wheel - long curved lines
- Vernier callipers - diameters/widths if solid objects
What is area used for?
Area is the amount of surface an object has.
What is Area measured in?
Area is measured in cm2(centimetre square (small 2),m2(metre square),
Km2(kilometre square)
How to find the area
Length multiplied by Width or Breadth
What is Mass
The amount of matter something has
What is mass measured in
Grams (g) and kilograms (kg)
How can you find mass in an object
Using scales
What is a Volume
Volume is the amount of space something takes up.
What is Volume measured in?
mm3,cm3,m3 (3 stands for cubed)
How do you find Volume of a regular object
Length by width by height
Experiment: To fine the volume if a small irregular object
Method:
1) Fill graduated cylinder with 100ml of water.
2) Put a stone inside the graduated cylinder and note how much the water is now.
3) Take away the original water amount(100ml) from the amount after adding the stone.
Result - the volume of the stone is the different between both volumes.
Conclusion - The volume of an small irregular shaped object like a stone can be measured using a graduated cylinder
To find the volume of a large irregular object
Method
1) Set up apparatus shown in diagram (show me or sum thing)
2) fill the overflow can with water until it reaches the spout
3) Place stone in overflow can.
4) use a graduated cylinder to measure the lot of water that leaves the can.
Result:The volume of the stone is found by subtracting the two values of water level that you had written down.
Conclusion
The volume of an irregular shaped object like a stone can be measured using a graduated cylinder and overflow can.
