Atoms Flashcards
What are atoms made up of?
Atoms are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons.
What is an atom?
The atom is the smallest part of an element that still retains the properties of that element.
Where are protons and neutrons found?
In the nucleus of the atom.
Where are electrons found?
Electrons are found in shells orbiting the nucleus.
How many electrons can the first shell hold and how many can all shells after that hold?
First shell = 2
All shells after = 8
What type of charge do a) protons,b) neutrons & c) electrons have ?
A) = positive charge (+1) B) = no charge C) = negative charge (-1)
What type of numbers does the periodic table give?
The periodic table gives the atomic number (small number) and the mass number.
What is the atomic number?
Number of protons which is the same as the number of electrons.
What is the mass number?
Number of protons + number of neutrons.
