Elements Flashcards
What is a compound made up of?
A compound is made up of two or more different atoms chemically combined.
•a compound is a completely new substance different to the elements that combine to make it.
What is an element made up of ? And where are the elements listed.
An element is made up of only one type of atom.
• the elements are listed in the periodic table
What is a molecule.
A molecule is the smallest amount of an element or compound that still gas the chemical proportions if that element or compound
Name 5 differences between compounds and mixtures.
1.)Compounds are made up of a single substance.
Mixtures are made up of two or more substances.
2.)Elements in a compound are always in a fixed ratio.
Amounts of a substance in a mixture can vary.
3.)Compounds are difficult to separate.
Mixtures are easy to separate.
4.)Properties of a compound are different to those of the elements it contains.
Properties of a mixture are similar to those of the substances in the mixture.
5.)There is usually a heat change when a compound is formed.
Very little heat change occurs when a mixture is made.
First 10 elements
Hydrogen, helium, lithium, beryllium, boron , carbon ,nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine and neon.
What is an atom ?
An atom is the smallest part if an element that still retains the properties of the element
4 facts about an atom.
Made up of protons neutrons and electrons
Protons and neutrons are in the nucleus
Electrons are founding the shells orbiting the nucleus
The first shell can hold a maximum of 2 electrons others maximum of 8
How many charges does the protons neutrons and electrons have
Protons have a positive charge (+1)
Neutrons have no charge
Electrons have a negative charge (-1)
The periodic table gives the …………………….. and the ………………
The ……………… is the amount of …………….. and ……………….
The ……………… is the amount of …………….. and ………………… together.
Atomic number and mass
Atomic number , protons and electrons.
Mass number , protons and neutrons
What is election configuration.
Shows the umber of electrons on each shell in order.
E.g (2,8,1)
What is the periodic table divided into?
Metals and non metals
The elements are arraigned in rows called
Periods
Vertical columns are called
Groups.
Group 1 is called ?
Name the elements
How many electrons on outer shell
Describe element
Alkali metals Lithium sodium and potassium Have one electron on outer shell Soft metal Storied in oil Very reactive
Group 2 is called ?
Name the elements
How many electrons on outer shell
Alkaline earth metal
Magnesium and calcium
2 electrons on outer shell
