Fuel Flashcards
What do you need in the fire triangle to create fire
Fuel, oxygen, heat
What are fossil fuels?
Give 2 examples
Fossil fuels are fuels that were formed from the remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago.
Examples: peat, coal
What chemical do all fossil fuels have in common?
Hydrocarbon
What do hydrocarbons contain
Hydrogen and carbon only
What do fossil fuels produce when burnt
Carbon dioxide and water
What is methane made of?
What is the symbol for methane.
What does methane produce when burned
hydrocarbons
CH4
Carbon dioxide and water
How is the greenhouse effect caused?
-heat from the sun is being trapped by carbon dioxide and other gases. This causes the temperature of the Earth to rise. Levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are increasing mainly due to the burning of fossil fuels, causing the earth to become warmer ( global warming)
Name 3 effects of greenhouse effect
Acid rain, sulfuric acid, Nitric acid
What is a fuel
A substance that burns in oxygen to produce heat
