Sensory disorders Flashcards
Aspects of Blindness?
delayed head control esp in prone
hypotonic if they have change in tone
delayed language
space exploring is dangerous. delayed.
Orientation of blindness things to note?
gain sense of position in space and become familiar with environment.
expose them to mvmt.
modify their postures.
Aspects of hearing impairments?
- many have atypical vestibular responses.
- use other senses to compensate others don’t.
What are signs of vestibular problems?
- impaired balance on one foot
- difficulty in prone
- less stability without vision
- Wide BOS/ small arm swing
- Use UE during transitional mvmt.
- limited visual scanning
Tx for Vestibular problems?
- improve eye movement
- incorporate body movement in diff planes and surfaces
- Alter sensory conditions
- Strengthen with target to postural muscles.
What is pervasive developmental Disorder and aspects?
Autism
- Multisensory impairments (hyper/o)
- disconnected from social
- severe language delay and developmental areas (gross motor)
How to Dx autism?
Dx before 3 y/o
from handout 2 in column A 1 in B
What happens if child does not meet criteria, is atypical, or is Dx after 3 for autism?
Dx as
PDDNOS
pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified
Gross/Fine motor skills for Autism?
hypotonic
abnormal sensory
static balance is affected to great degree
Limited skills that require visual attention
Cognitive Deficits of Autism?
- attention/arousal not great
- Learning and memory is different
- Limited repertoire of coping.
Learning and memory of autism?
concrete
memorize
its either all or none
based on situation.
Aspects of Asperger’s syndrome
- late development of speech/desire to socialize
- IQ norm
- lack empathy
- one sided interaction
- Repetitive speech pattern
- bad nonverbal communication also
- HATES change
- clumsy/uncoordinated
similar to autism
Primary symptoms of Rett’s Syndrome
- usually normal development 6-18 mo
- head growth slows with age
- severely impaired expressive language
- lose purposeful hand skills/ repeat others.
- shakiness of torso
- ataxic gait
2ndary symptoms of Rett’s syndrome
Breathing dysfx. seizures b/w 2-4 y/o rigidity/spasticity scoliosis dec mobility with age. constipation dec growth bad sleep pattern bad circulation of LE irritable
Stage 1 of Rett’s
6m-1.5 yr slowing development less eye contact calm gross motor delays
Stage 2 of Rett’s
1-4 yrs
- rapid regression
- lose hand fx/interaction like autism
- hand wringing/clapping
- unsteady gait
- tremor when excited.
Stage 3 of Rett’s
plateau in preschool
- less irritable
- increase eye contact/interaction
- increase apraxia/seizure/hand mvmt.
- abnormal postures appear.
Stage 4 of Rett’s
late deterioration after stage 3 (10 yrs)
- reduced mobility/amb
- muscle rigidity and dystonia
- no decline in cognition/communication/hand skill
- hand movement may decrease tho.
Tx for Rett’s
slow progression maintain ambulation improve balance maintain full ROM prevent deformity improve hand use.
Childhood disintegration disorder?
2-4 yrs.
lose: language/interest in socializing/ toileting/self care.
looks autistic but look at history.
What are the behavioral techniques?
Reinforcement
Shaping to what u want
Chaining fwd/bckwd
