CP Flashcards
Nonprogressive lesion to immature brain during perinatal period
Cerebral Palsy
Leaves Motor/sensory deficits
Patho of CP?
Supeppendymal hemorrhage
Encephalopathy 2ndary to hypoxia
Neuropathy 2ndary to malformation
Primary impairments of CP?
- dec force generation
- altered tone (spasticity)
- abnormal extensibility
- hyperactive reflexes
- poor selective muscle activity/ anticipatory regulation
- impaired motor memory
2ndary impairments of CP?
-malalignment
-abnormal muscle characterisitics
Hyperextensibility
Atrophy of fast fibers.
Fx limitations of CP?
Delayed developmental skills
Limited/inefficient mobility
Limited Fx skills
What are some gait predictors for CP?
Deviations?
If u sit by 24 mo/ should walk before 8
Abnormal: PF/knee ext. —crouched gait— limit swing— weak abd/gastrocs
Eval of CP includes
ROM (a/p/rapid) Tone (ashworth) Strength Algnment Reflexes Developmental skills Gait Cognitive
Tools for CP?
movement assessment of infants (MAI)
Gross motorfuncton measure
PEDI
WeeFIM
Abnormal patterns of neck and shoudlers?
Neck: hyperextension/shoulder elevation/assymety
Shoulder: prolonged extension/ lack scap activity/ dec WB
Abnormal patters of pelvis
Poor dissociation
Ant tilt (weak abs): overuse hip F/ER to balance/WS or uses lateral flexion
Post tilt: overactive extensors: add/IR —sacral sit— W sit.
Tx of CP?
Minimize effects and prevent 2ndary impairments
Educate family
Promote sensorimotor experience and developmental skills
Provision of equipment: cast/postion/orthosis
How to promote developmental/Fx skills?
Align body
WB + WS against gravity
Transitional mvmnts.
Work on purposeful movement
What are concepts to optimize motor control?
Feedback (intr/extr/EMG)
Similarity of tasks
Variety in setup
