Developmental Coordination disorder Flashcards
What are characteristics of Developmental Coordination Disorder?
dyspraxia/clumsy
coordination below average/interferes with ADL weak muscles (hands esp) no cerebral dominance Retain developmental reflexes
*early motor milestones on schedule
What is theory behind DCD?
problems with identifying stimulus
response selection
Programming (timing/secquence)
Types of Agnosias?
Apraxias?
Astereognosis
Finger agnosia
Agraphesthesia
Ideational
Ideomotor
Constructional
Limb kinetic
Impairments of DCD?
inaccurate sensory acuity Poor body schema hypotonic Jt lax Static balance affected poor imitation poor planning inefficient movement no variety
Fx limitations of DCD
accident prone immature movement delayed higher level motor skills bad handwriting problems with ADL
Emotional problems of DCD?
poor self image emotionally unstable immature avoid difficult activity blames others complains a lot plays with younger children
What to assess for DCD
age appropriate activities fine motor (handwriting) ADLs sensory acuity tone prox stability coordination oculomotor pursuit dominance Ball skills.
Developmenta reflex measureS?
ATNR: 7yr (30 deg)
5 yr (45 deg)
STNR: 5 yr 5-15 deg
Tonic lab : supine flex/ prone ext for 20 sec
ineffective equillibrium/righting
Ways to test sensory?
double tactile
stereognosis
Graphesthesia
Kinesthesia/proprio
Ways to test proximal stability?
stand on one foot
half knee static/alt
side sit
Wheel barrow
Coordination assessment?
Diadokinesis
thumb to finger
cross midline
gross motor.
Tx of DCD?
allow success make it less hard at first (can use vision) improve sensory incr strength pair weakness and strength set up environment to help verbal cueing
