sensation and attention Flashcards
1
Q
SENSATION
A
is the initial detection and processing of stimuli
2
Q
sensation stages
A
- Reception - Presence of physical stimuli detected by sensory neurons in sense
organs - Transduction - Different forms of stimuli converted into electrochemical energy
- Transmission - energy transferred to brain for processing
3
Q
PERCEPTION
A
- interpreting messages and takes place when the brain receives information, is organised and given meaning
4
Q
perception stages
A
- Selection
- Organisation
- Interpretation
5
Q
attention types
A
selected, divided, habituation, dishabituation
6
Q
SELECTED
A
- totally aware and focused on what we have selected to pay attention to
- oblivious to other things when in a highly focused state
7
Q
DIVIDED
A
- Lets us do two things at the same time
- If task is complex, one of the activities usually suffers
8
Q
HABITUATION
A
- decrease in attention when a stimulus is repeated
- eg. Unaware of traffic noises if living by a busy road
9
Q
DISHABITUATION
A
- renewal of attention when there is a change to the stimulus.
- eg. Screeching of brakes
10
Q
electrical activity of the brain
A
- Recorded on an electroencephalograph (EEG)
- Four brain patterns associated with the different states of consciousness are -
alpha, beta, theta, delta
11
Q
galvanic skin response
A
electrical conductivity of the skin
- Measured by attaching electrodes to hair-free parts of the skin
- Electrical current passes more easily through wet skin instead of dry
