Personality Flashcards
definition of personality
the characteristic ways of thinking, feelings
and acting that make a person an individual.
Freud
considered that personality develops from efforts to resolve conflict between our primitive, pleasure seeking, biological urges and our internalised social reactions. Considered personality to involve the interaction of three systems (abstract
constructs) - Id, ego, superego.
Id
primitive, works on maximizing pleasure, biological urges,
irrational and impulsive, unconscious.
Ego
regulator and sets standards for behaviour, directs energies of
id, takes reality into account, makes sure behaviour is appropriate,
in conscious control of behaviour
Superego
voice of conscious, perfectionist, leads to pride or guilt, often directly opposed to id.
