pro-social
- behaviour that is helping, that benefits others and society
- Normally voluntary
- Can be altruistic in nature
- Can be an automatic response or a deliberate response.
anti-social
- behaviour that is harmful to others or the greater community.
- Two of the many types of anti-social behaviour are; aggression and prejudice.
determinants of liking
proximity
- the tendency for people to form social relationships with individuals who are
physically closer to them.
similarity
- how much you have in common with someone and how much you can relate to
them.
reciprocity
- the tendency for individuals to think positively of others who express positive
regard for them.
relationship development in adolescence
- dyads (pairs)
- cliques (small groups)
- crowds (large groups)
Stage 1 Cliques
- early adolescence
- Usually small groups of the same sex
- Meet reasonably often to plan social activities, share secrets and gossip
- Have an authority figure as leader
Stage 2 Development of crowd
- occurs when the unisex cliques interact with one another
- You were only eligible for membership of a crowd if you belonged to a clique
Stage 3 Heterosexual cliques
- change in the social structure of the crowd
- Reflects the practice of dating
Stage 4 Fully developed crowd
- a fully developed crowd
- Composed of a number of couples in close association with one another
Stage 5 Crowd disintegration
- the couples had begun to go their separate ways.
