parts of the brain Flashcards
Hindbrain
The hindbrain coordinates functions that are fundamental to survival, including respiratory rhythm, motor activity, sleep, and
wakefulness.
Midbrain
The midbrain serves important functions in motor movement, particularly movements of the eye, and in auditory and visual processing.
Forebrain
The forebrain controls body temperature, reproductive
functions, eating, sleeping, and the display of emotions
Left hemisphere
The left side of the brain is responsible for controlling the right side of the body. It also performs tasks that have to do with logic, such as in science and mathematics.
Right hemisphere
the right hemisphere coordinates the left side of the body, and performs tasks that have do with creativity and the arts.
Corpus callosum
Joins the left and right hemispheres. Allows them to
communicate.
Frontal lobe
important cognitive skills in humans, such as emotional expression, problem solving, memory, language, judgment, and sexual behaviors.
Parietal lobe
It functions in processing
sensory information regarding the location of parts of the body as well as
interpreting visual information and processing language and mathematics.
Temporal lobe
The temporal lobe is involved in primary auditory processing, such as hearing.
Occipital lobe
participates in vision processing. It processes
and interprets everything we see.
Structure of the neuron
- Cell body - contains the nucleus, powerhouse of the cell.
- Axon - conducts impulses away from the cell body
- Dendrites - receive impulses
- Myelin sheath - fatty layer that insulates axon and speeds up communication.
