semi structured interviews Flashcards
semi structured interviews
Interviews that have both structured and unstructured elements. Usually the interviewer has a list of topics to cover but flexibility in the actual questions asked – usually generate qualitative data.
Simpson - Middle Aged Gay Men Negotiating Urban Spaces
Simpson wanted to find out how getting older affected gay men in Manchersters norms, and whether social class or ethnicity had an impact on gay identity. 27 in depth semi structured interviews were used. The sample focussed on the Manchester gay scene which is centred on ‘The Village’, an area within the city where gay bars and clubs predominate and gay culture is pervasive.
Val Gillies
wanted to see how class structure can be part of the daily process of raising children. To collect qualitative data the research researchers sampled 25 mothers and 11 fathers from 27 households across the UK. They participated in semi structured, in depth interviews.

High Validity. People are able to talk about something in detail and depth. The meanings behind an action may be revealed as the interviewee is able to speak for themselves with little direction from interviewer.
Positive rapport between interviewer and interviewee. Very simple, efficient and practical way of getting data about things that can’t be easily observed (feelings and emotions, for example).
Complex questions and issues can be discussed / clarified. The interviewer can probe areas suggested by the respondent’s answers, picking-up information that had either not occurred to the interviewer or of which the interviewer had no prior knowledge.
