A short version of the whole research that is used to test out the effectiveness of the research tools e.g sampling, methods.

This study aimed to enable Chinese older people to influence policy and practice. The first involved group discussions with older Chinese people to formulate a joint statement. They carried out a pilot study which gained the trust of their participants, to relax them and help train them to become active, engaged members of the group discussion - validity and ethics.

Before using a large scale questionnaire she used it on a small sample to check weather the research tool is well designed so that respondents understand the questions - Participants can give feedback which the researcher can assess their experiment and make the necessary changes
