Non - participant observation Flashcards
Definition
Watching a group but not getting involved or playing an active part
Stan cohen
Stan Cohen used non-participant observation. He went to Clacton and watched the youth / police interaction. (use own knowledge)
By reducing the level of interaction between the researcher and the participants you can reduce the risk of the Hawthorne effect.
Holden
Holden was aiming to find out the extent to which children’s play at different ages and settings reinforces or overcomes the segregation of different ethnic groups. He wanted to see this by observing the play between children in parks and schools. He used a structured schedule creating quantitative data.
No bias as he can’t influence them, reliable quant.
