Semester 1 Final Flashcards
Nitrogen fixation
Converts N2 from the atmosphere. Biotic process converts N2 to ammonia (NH3) whereas abiotic processes convert N2 to nitrate (NO3-)
Nitrification
Nitrifying bacteria convert ammonium (NH4+)into nitrate (N)2-) and then into nitrate (NO3-)
Assimilation
Plants and algae take up either ammonium or nitrate.
Herbivores assimilate nitrogen by eating plants and algae
Mineralization/Ammonification
Decomposers in soil and water break down biological nitrogen compounds into ammonium
Dentrification
A series of steps, denitrifying bacteria in oxygen - poor soil and stagnant water convert nitrate into nitrous oxide and eventually nitrogen gas
Mutualism
A interaction between two specific species that increase the chances of survival o reproduction for both species. Both benefit from the interaction.
Parasitism
An interaction where one organism lives on another organism, consuming a small fraction of the hose in order to keep it alive (Winner + looser)
Commensialism
An interaction between two species in which one species benefit and the other species is neither harmed nor helped
