lexemes that are grouped together with others with related meanings they belong to the same semantic field
over/under-generalization
over-generalisation: often children will make inferences extending meanings. eg. calling any 4 legged animal a dog
under-generalisation: eg. child may only call their family dog a dog, and not other dogs

a words literal meaning, as defined in the dictionary. process of codification a word takes on an agreed upon meaning
connotation
additional emotional associations or values that attach themselves to a particular word
broadening
lexemes that have widened their meaning through broadening. when a word means more that it did because it keeps its original meaning while also taking on new uses
narrowing
when words mean less. words become more specific. eg meat went from meaning any food to only animal flesh
elevation
when a lexeme takes on a more positive meaning that it once had
deterioration
lexeme takes on a more negative meaning that it originally had
shift
words that take on new meanings and lose their original meanings
