phrases
collection of words that have a grammatical relationship with each other. phrases cannot exist as a complete grammatical sentence.
noun phrase
contains a noun and other related words that describe the noun
‘the dancing goat’
verb phrase
contains a main verb plus any related words
‘was tickling’
‘was loudly played to the audience’
prepositional phrase
contains a preposition and the object of the preposition
‘in the morning’
adjective phrase
group of words that function as an adjective in a sentence
‘brightly coloured fuzzy’
adverb phrase
contains adverbs or words acting as adverbs
‘ so slowly’
clause
has to consist of a verb and a subject. (noun phrase and verb phrase)
main/independent clause - can stand alone as a sentence
subordinate/dependent clause - cannot stand alone as a sentence
sentences
group of words that make sense as a whole and create meaning. contains at least one clause
sentence fragments
informal context. act as a sentence, but are not a complete clause
‘potato cakes 3for $1’
simple sentences
contain one main clause
compound sentences
contain at least two main clauses joined together by a coordinate conjunction
complex sentence
contain a single main clause and one or more subordinating clauses
compound-complex
must have at least 3 clauses, at least 2 main clauses and at least one subordinate clause
