self report technique
any method in which a person is asked to state or explain their own feelings/opinions/behaviours related to a given topic
questionnaire
a set of written questions used to assess a persons thoughts and or experiences
interviews
a conversational exchange between the interviewer and one or more individual.
open questions
does not have a fixed range of answers and respondents are free to answer as they wish
closed questions
a fixed number of responses predetermined by the researcher
structured interviews
made up of predetermined questions that are asked in a fixed order
unstructured interviews
no set questions, researcher asks open ended questions and will try to let the interview flow like a natural conversation
semi structured interviews
predetermined questions, order may vary
strengths of questionnaires
- question a large sample quickly
- reduce investigator effects
weakness of questionnaires
- social desirability ( answer to make yourself favourable)
- untruthful responses
- bias in sampling
- low response rate
