experimental designs Flashcards
experimental designs
the different ways in which participants can be organised in relation to experimental conditions
independent measures
participants are allocated to different groups where each group represents one condition
repeated measures
all participants take part in all conditions of the experiment
matched pairs
participants are matched by similar variables that may effect the dv. one group is condition A and the other is B
counterbalancing
an attempt to control order effects in repeated measures (ABBA)
random allocation
an attempt to control for participant variables in independent groups which ensures each participant has an equal chance of being in one condition
individual measures ao3
- no order effects. practice or fatigue effects
- individual differences can effect the DV.
repeated measures ao3
individual differences are controlled
- deterioration due to tiredness or boredom
- improvement due to practice
matched pairs ao3
- less CV caused by individual differences, no order effect
- difficult, time consuming
