research issues Flashcards
extraneous variables
any other variable other than the iv that may effect the dv. they do not vary systematically with the dv
examples of extraneous variables
natural characteristics of participants e.g gender, age
confounding variables
a kind of EV, however confounding variables vary systematically with the DV. therefore could possibly be the reason for the effect of the DV
demand characteristics
any cues that may be interpreted by the participant as revealing the purpose of the study that may lead to change in behaviour
investigator effects
any effect of the investigators behaviour on the research outcome (DV) e.g interaction
randomisation
the use of change methods to control for the effects of bias when designing materials and deciding the order of experimental conditions
standardisation
using the same formalised procedures and instructions for all participants in a study
