Self efficacy Flashcards
What is self efficacy
It is the belief in your ability to master a specific situation
Interaction
the combination of situational and personality factors that decide the level of achievement motivation
Personality
your level of competitiveness and achievement motivation
Experience
your amount of past success in a task and your belief in your ability for future success
Situation
for example playing at home or away
What 3 things are confidence based on (according to vealy)
The interaction of personality, experience and the situation
Trait confidence
Consistent, innate confidence shown in most situations. The belief in the ability to do well in a range of sports.
State confidence
Situation specific. Temporary and can vary depending on the interaction of experience and personality. It is in the moment.
Competitive orientation
How much a performer is drawn to competitive situations
Objective sporting situation
The performance is a combination of the type of skill and the situation that the skill is performed in
Subjective outcome
The player makes a judgement of how well they did, taking into account the objective sporting situation. If it is good then trait confidence and competitive orientation increases
Self efficacy theory (bandura 1977)
High self efficacy increases task persistence and motivation.
Bandura’s 4 factors affecting confidence
Performance accomplishments, vicarious experiences, verbal persuasion and emotional arousal
What are performance accomplishments?
What has been successful for you in the past
What are vicarious experiences?
Seeing others do the demonstration and copying, most effective if they are of a similar ability
What is verbal persuasion?
Reinforcement and encouragement, most effective if from a significant other
What is emotional arousal?
Your perception of your arousal level
How to improve confidence?
Set realistic goals, show accurate demonstrations, avoid social comparisons, use reinforcement and encouragement, stress management, mental rehearsal
Advantages of homefield advantage for the home team
Support and encouragement, familiar environment leads to optimal arousal, more confidence and motivation, social facilitation, no tiredness from travelling
Disadvantages of homefield advantage for home team
Increased pressure and expectations raises anxiety and decreases performance (catastrophe theory), social inhibition, evaluation apprehension, self-pressure
Disadvantages of homefield advantage for away team
Increased anxiety due to hostile crowd, more fouls, social inhibition
