What is aggression?
The intent to harm outside of the rules and include hostile behaviour
What is assertion?
Well motivated and correct behaviour within the rules and with no motivation to harm

suggests it is caused by a trigger. Can be learnt from a coach or other
Assertion
Well motivated behaviour inside the rules with no intent to harm

Aggression is learnt from experience and those around us - positively reinforced aggression will be copied

Aggressive responses are innate and a result of evolution
Frustration hypothesis hypothesis
Aggression is inevitable when frustrating situations block us from achieving our goals (eg; bad refereeing calls)
Catharsis
When individuals vent aggression to reduce emotions
Strategies to help prevent aggression
Apply fines and bans, highlight non-aggressive role models, teach relaxation and stress management, don’t reinforce aggressive acts in training / at all
