The desire with which competitive situations are approached or avoided
What is approach behaviour
When the performer approaches the competitive situation with enthusiasm
Example of approach behaviour
Volunteering to take the penalty
Avoidance behaviour
Attempting to avoid the competition at all costs

Cowering away from taking the penalty

Introvert or extrovert, confidence, NACH or NAF
Situational factors
Probability of success, incentive value, familiar or unfamiliar, high risk = high reward
Reinforcement
Praise to maintain motivation and encourage task persistence
Attribute retraining
Changing the reasons given for failure or success
Task related
Measure of success against personal standards, Success can be achieved regardless of the result
Outcome related
Doesn’t matter how the result is achieved as long as the goal is reached. If you fail then motivation and confidence is reduced
