What is goal setting?
Strategy used to reduce the effects of social loafing and improve cohesion / motivation
Outcome goals
Goals set against performance of others and based on a result. Team can perform badly and scrape a result but still succeed.
Task oriented
Getting a better overall performance
Performance goals
Focused on getting a better performance and not so worried about the end result.
Process goals
Based on improving technique, improvement in technique can improve overall skill.
SMARTER abbreviation
Specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-bound, evaluate and re-do
Specific goals
Should be clear and concise so that any improvements made to be clear
Measurable goals
Using assessment to obtain data to identify progress and comparison
Achievable goals
The performer should be able to reach their goal, otherwise they will not be motivated
Time-bound
Short and long term goals need to be identified so they have a deadline.
Evaluable goals
The performer and coach should evaluate how and if the goal was achieved so they can see what to improve upon.
Re-doable
If the goal isn’t achievable or will take too long then the target can be lowered so they have more motivation to achieve.
