self confidence and self efficacy Flashcards
what is self esteem
sense of self-worth or personal value
self-confidence
the belief that athletes have about their ability to be successful in sport
is it state or trait
- thought to be trait, eg. confident student, confident footballer, confident speaker. howeveer confidence can change in a situation and become state like, eg. if not confident with a sport or a mistake is made.
what is the inverted u model of confidence
lack confidence, performance low. Optimal point. over confidence reduces performance
link between competence and confidence
if the athlete is simply not skilled enough, even if optimally confident, competence will hold them back
what is the self confidence model
- 3 layers that impact confidence and the consequences of confidence
- whos model is it
layer 1-influential factors
- organisational culture - what are the team, coaches, standard like
- personality
layer 2- sources of confidence
- achievements - eg. if winning, will be confident
- Self regulation- how you manage your feelings and the knock on effect
- Social climate- people you are around
layer 3- constructs that will increase confidence
- confidence in decision making
- confidence in physical skills
confidence in resiliency
- Confidence effects your affect (emotional responses to things), behavioural choices (eg. Approach to training) and cognitive framework
- vealey
what is self efficacy
The perception of one about their ability to perform a specific task successfully
self efficacy theory
- what is it
- whos work was it based on
- a combination of personal and environmental variables affect Self efficacy which influences the performance/behaviours produced
- bandura
4 reasons why self efficacy is important
- behaviour patterns - effort, persistance
- thought patterns - worry, how they attribute things
- for reaching goals- more belief they can be achieved
- task specific -
what is the biggest determinant of performance/ behaviour if skills and motivation are present
SE
what did Moritz et al 2000 say about SE and performance
Higher levels of self efficacy are associated with better levels of performance
what did Nanna Nothoff et al. (2017) say about PA in older adults
- higher self-efficacy = higher physical activity levels. key for health in older age
what did Fasczewski and gill (2019) say about SE, SDM and PA in people with multiple sclerosis
- high self efficacy for physical activity (enjoyment and confidence in ability) and self determined motivation lead to greater physical activity engagement and therefore quality of life
6 sources of self efficacy
- performance accomplishments
- can have a positive or negative effect on self efficacy depending on the performance - vicarious experiences
- demonstrating or modelling (4 stage process) during learning. modelling effectiveness depends on the type of model, eg. age or gender, skill levels and similarly - verbal persuasion
- can be internal or external. effectiveness depends on how trusted/how valued to person is. likely to have short term impact - perceptions of their physiological state (direction)
- if state associated with poor performance and incompetence = lower self efficacy (vice versa)
5.imaginal experiences
- of themselves or others performing effectively/ineffectively in that situation. if effective can be beneficial, vice versa - emotional states-
- feeling in the right state of mind. if emotions/mood is associated with poor performance and incompetence, lower self efficacy (vice versa)
- imaginal experiences - seeing and feeling themself be successful in a situation.
what can coaches do to the sources of self efficacy for their performers
can target these sources to enhance self-efficacy
